As a part of the city, Šeškinės district started growing in the middle of the 20th century but earlier, however, his was a rural area with private houses. Beside that, the area features a rather rare glacier-formed geological formation— an esker Šeškinė Esker. Šeškinės district was first mentioned in 1390. The name of this place derives from a fitch that was a common animal in these sandy and gravelly hills. In the 16th-18th centuries, this territory was the property of noblemen Radvilos.

Šeškinė Esker is a natural monument located in Šeškinės district, a relict of glaciated accumulative relief. There are as many as 9 eskers in Lithuania but Šeškinė Esker is the longest and the most impressive. In 1964, it was declared a protected natural monument of Lithuania. An esker is a rather rare geological feature. The relief of this place was formed by a glacier some 16–18 thousand years ago. Water flowing under the glaciers accumulated a lot of different substances that later formed a twisty 1160-metre-chain of hills made of gravel, sand, and boulders. For many years, the hills were intensively excavated. During the Second World War, the surface of the esker was heavily damaged by entrenchments whereas gravel mining left a wide pit in the hill. In the olden days, Šeškinė Esker was used as a natural defensive wall of Vilnius. In 1390, it was a place of battles with crusades who attacked Vilnius. In 1794, 1831, and 1863, Šeškinės hills were a gathering point of rebels who used to plan their next moves here. It was also the place where the army of rebels led by Jokūbas Jasinskis was defending the city.
